What Is Off-Page SEO?

Here’s a crash course in SEO. Search engine optimization distills into two activities: on-page and off-page SEO.

On-page explanation: keyword selection and tactical insertion in your website. Period. You must be smart about your keyword research for best results.

Do not undermine the importance of thoroughly choosing your website keywords. By the way, other terms for keywords are key search terms and keyword phrases. The better you choose, the better your off-page SEO can work for you.

Off-page SEO is about getting links to your website. Search engines in large part judge the value of a website by the number of links to a particular site and the quality of those links.

Specifically off-page SEO is getting links to your site. The Internet is a web; the web is made up of sites and links; the more links to your site, the better that is for your site because search engines value links.

For example, if your website is about a yoga studio, you’re better off getting a link from a health facility than a mechanic. That makes sense because the web is a network; in order for the network to work, it must be connected in ways that make sense.

Is it easy getting links? You bet, but it takes work. There a three main styles of link building.

1. Write such good content other sites want to link to you. This is the attraction method.

2. Be a deal-maker by link exchanging with related websites. E-mail a site owner or webmaster and ask for a link exchange.

3. Be a real go-getter and set up your own links on other sites – take full control of your link building efforts by publishing content on sites other than your sites. Publish articles, comment on blogs, write guest blog posts, and list your site with directories. Super simple stuff; it just takes some work.

My favorite method is number 3. There are many places to put out content with links to your site. You can write articles, comment on blogs, get you site bookmarked with social bookmarking sites, and write guest blog posts … to name a few methods.

The disadvantage to my approach, which works well, is it takes a lot of my time. Think about writing fresh content and then putting it on article directories. That takes time. Also, writing blog comments and posts takes a fair amount of time as well.

However, I do have help with my off-page SEO efforts. I use some very good SEO software services that automate some of my efforts leaving me only having to focus on creating great content.

Link building is one of the major strategies of “off page SEO”. SEO is built up of two different types of SEO on page SEO and off page SEO. Link building is the number one strategy in off page SEO which helps to build popularity, increase search engine rankings and helps to improve pagerank. This is why link building is important.Link building is the process of increasing the amount of overall links that are directed to your website, these can either be internal or external links (usually made up of both internal and external links). External links are also called backlinks and are links from another website (generally within the same market) to your website. The more important the website that is linking to you is the better and stronger the external links (backlinks) are. The importance of a website is created through using the Google algorithm and without confusing you too much i will say that the algorithm takes many factors in to account, including domain/website age, pagerank, SERP (Search engine results page) rankings and much much more.To increase the amount of backlinks you have there are a number of strategies you can put in place, some which are ethical and some unethical practices. I shall just focus on the ethical practices which you can take to increase the amount of backlinks. One of the most effective ways of increasing the number of backlinks you have is through your content by ensuring your content is unique, informative, entertaining and useful then many people will link back to your content, they may bookmark the content and tell friends about it. Secondly you can perform link exchanges with other websites in your market this can be done through contacting the owners of the other website via their contacts page.Forum signatures these work a charm, especially if the forum your a member of is relevant to your websites market. There are several ways in which you can increase the amount of links you have incoming to your website, some which are obvious and you are probably already doing and others which are unique creative and effective.

To learn more about link building and how to effectively increase the amount of links you have ethicaly and quickly then you can read my link building article. It is an indepth guide which discusses the processes and strategies used in link building.
