Search engine optimization for your blog can include lots and lots of things and knowing what they are is an ever changing art. In all probability, what is right now will still be correct in six months but it will just be less effective.

The trick is to always be aware of trends in online marketing and make sure you move with the times. Search engines are constantly ranking websites on a number of different things. If you take two football blogs with exactly the same content and compare them but one has its pages Meta tags filled in correctly. Which do you think will rank higher in search engines, the one that tells the engine what the blog is about in the tags or the one that says nothing?

So maybe you should start off with just adding say Meta tags and seeing how that gets a result when copy and paste a line of your pages text in a search engine. Then change the Meta tags to something else and re-submit your pages to the search engines. Next time you do a search with the same search term as before, you will have a good idea of which is getting you the best results.

Then try exactly the same thing but with the title of the page in the URL and you’ll soon see that the page title and URL are as important as the Meta tags and description of your page. The text on your page is without doubt the most important aspect of your optimization. Web crawlers run over your pages and analyze every bit of your text.

Something that has been around for years are back links which; as the name suggests, link back in to your site. In the past it was a good idea to get as many back links from as many places as you could. There were even schemes around which operated as a link exchange so that you got links to your site in return for links to others.

These days search engines have wised up to this method and a simple exchange of links will not help and may even be detrimental. Search engines are now aware that some sites set up reciprocal links which is all well and good. Where the good sites stand out is where they have more sites linking in to them than they link to. This is a good example of something that has trended and then faded away in to obscurity.

To say that back links are worthless would be a big mistake and one that nobody should make. The important thing to remember is that if a site links in to your blog about football and the linking site is a football site then it’s a good link. If you have a hundred sites about football linking in to your blog and they in turn have lots of good links then this is very good.

To put it in a nutshell, there are a hundred thousand things that are or have been good methods of optimization. The best thing someone could do is talk to someone that does it for a career or invest in some software that can take care of most of it. Whatever you decide to do, search engine optimization for your blog is something you need to get right.
